Software People Rely On

A method that stays in a paper doesn’t change how anyone works, so I write and maintain software to put the ideas I develop into people’s hands, drawing on the years I spent on the engineering and security side of data work in industry.

R
Specify, run, and report vibration-of-effects and specification analyses. Turns a set of defensible analytic choices into a reproducible grid of results, with reporting that carries the spread rather than hiding it. Ships with a companion Quarto book.

Reviewing Software as Scholarship

Research software deserves the same scrutiny as a manuscript. I review submissions for the Journal of Open Source Software, rOpenSci, and pyOpenSci, assessing correctness, documentation, test coverage, and whether a package will still work for someone in three years.

  • Software referee, the Journal of Open Source Software, rOpenSci, and pyOpenSci.
  • Journal referee, Journal of Machine Learning Research, Transactions on Machine Learning Research, and The R Journal.
  • Instructor and lesson maintainer, The Carpentries.
Before the PhD

Industry Practice

I spent seven years working with data in industry before starting my doctorate, as a data scientist, an information security analyst, and a consultant. That work is why the security and governance thread in my research exists: I have been on the side of the table where a pipeline has to keep running, a dataset has to stay protected, and a decision has to be defended to someone who did not write the code.

  • Artificial intelligence safety, policy, and governance: independent advisory work for Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and OpenAI on the safety and governance of frontier AI systems.
  • Data science: modelling, pipeline engineering, and analysis in production, including breast cancer risk modelling with the Athena Breast Health Network as a data scientist at Pacific Life, and selection to the McKinsey & Company Insight program (one of roughly one hundred from a field of more than two thousand).
  • Consulting and strategy: a strategy and analytics consultant at Deloitte, translating statistical findings for the people who have to act on them.
  • Information security and privacy: security analysis and data governance, carrying Global Information Assurance Certification Security Essentials (GSEC) and designation as a OneTrust Fellow of Privacy Technology.

Community

Open Source & Community

I founded and led the Irvine chapter of R-Ladies Global, growing it to more than 630 members across thirty-five meetups, and I co-organize R-Ladies Baltimore, now more than 1,420 members across forty meetups, both rated 4.8 out of 5 by the people who came. In all, that’s seventy-five meetups reaching a combined membership of more than 2,050 statisticians, data scientists, and students. I previously served on the R-Ladies Global leadership team.
