Service & Outreach
Much of my work is open by default: open-source software and open science, the peer-review and committee work that keeps fields running, and outreach that brings data science to young people and the public.
Open Source & Open Science
I contribute across many parts of the open source and open science community: maintaining and reviewing software, refereeing for open journals, and translating teaching materials. I am the contributor and former maintainer of aws.s3, an R package with more than 50.6 million downloads from the Comprehensive R Archive Network. I founded and led the Irvine chapter of R-Ladies Global, which I grew to more than 630 members, co-organize R-Ladies Baltimore, now more than 1,420 members, and previously served on the R-Ladies Global leadership team.

NASA
I joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Datanaut corps in 2018 (one of 50 people and 11 students worldwide in that class) and contributed to the Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Group. I have served on NASA Science Mission Directorate review panels for open-source science and science activation.
Outreach
- Lifetime member and Gold Award recipient, Girl Scouts of the United States of America, leading STEM workshops including citizen and data science at NASA.
- Scientific workshop leader, Skype a Scientist, and mentor and judge at regional science and engineering fairs.
Service to the Field
A good part of my time goes to the shared work that keeps fields running: reviewing for journals, conferences, and funders since 2018, and serving on the committees and panels that decide what gets funded and who gets hired.
- Invited grant-panel reviewer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (the Science Activation and High Priority Open-Source Science programs), grant programs of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Essential Open Source Software for Science program of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Wellcome Trust, and the Kavli Foundation.
- Invited ethics reviewer for the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), 2023 to 2026, and a reviewer for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting and the ACM Conference on Equity and Access in Algorithms, Mechanisms, and Optimization (EAAMO).
- Named Top Reviewer by the Scientific Computing with Python (SciPy) Conference in 2020, where I reviewed from 2018 to 2023.
- Mathematics and Statistics Editor, Nightingale, the journal of the Data Visualization Society.
- Program committee member for the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) Technical Symposium, the AAAI/ACM Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Society (AIES), the U.S. Research Software Engineer Conference, and the SciPy Conference.
- Session chair at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), the Eastern North American Region (ENAR) Spring Meeting of the International Biometric Society, and the first EUGLOH Conference on Pedagogical Development.
- Graduate student representative on four Johns Hopkins faculty search and selection committees, including a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor search across the schools of public health, medicine, and engineering, and a departmental chair search in Biostatistics.
- Elected and appointed member of seven university councils and task forces, among them the Bloomberg School of Public Health Teaching Council, the Public Health and Artificial Intelligence Strategic Endeavors task force, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Agora Institute Dialogue and Debate Initiative, and the Doctoral Student Council.
- Inaugural Communications and Membership Chair of the American Statistical Association (ASA) Privacy and Confidentiality Interest Group, advisory board member for the Global Information Assurance Certification at the SANS Institute, a reviewer for the Coalition on Health AI Cybersecurity Workgroup, and an Ambassador in the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers programme for values and democracy in European research.
